Easter Weekend April 14 - 17 Inspired by flower carpets across Europe, artist Jo Vickers will be designing and making a visual treat in the heat of Piccadilly Gardens. Made entirely of flowers tied, woven and hung in sculptural formations, they will show off an aspect of the square with new eyes. Celebrate the arrival of Spring, new growth and the beginning of the flower season.
Enchanted Evenings We are planning a season of events throughout the summer, under the banner of 'Enchanted Evenings'. Each of them will be a delightful experience in its own right and suitable for all ages. We aim to create warm, inclusive events to which everyone feels welcome - come and feel the Streets Ahead magic again in 2006 - once, twice .... or everytime!
We launch the summer with a large scale spectacular outdoor show with fire, water and giant machines! You may remember the first visit of Titanick, which thrilled 8,000 people at Streets Ahead in 1997... we are delighted at last to have them return to Manchester, with their new show. 'Insect' is based around an East German morality tale and describes living creatures' ever-present urge to fly. In this case, the creatures are wingless ants, who, in the gradual evolution of all life, produce their first offspring with wings. The show plays out the jealousy and rage of the parents, juxtaposed with their pride of and need to protect their young. In true Theater Titanick style, the show is performed on an epic scale. The ants are enormous mechanical creations; there is fire, water, things arrive by crane and take off along a runway. The struggle for flight will never seem the same again! We have chosen the beginning of June as: (i) this is the first of our Enchanted Evenings and we'd like to start with a truly spectacular event, to capture your imagination! (ii) this is the weekend that everyone will be expecting to be the Garden of Delights. We replace it with something excellent but different - and hope it makes up for the disappointment we know that many of you may be feeling Presented in collaboration with Contact Theatre June 17 and 18 FEAST! Midsummer picnic
Bring your own picnic or try food prepared by cultural communities living around South Manchester - or probably both! You may sit at our long tables or on your own blanket on the grass. During your picnic, we offer a feast for your eyes and ears with tabletop entertainment, mariarchi serenading, circus, street theatre, activities and games. Bring candles and a bunch of flowers along with your food! Dress up, bring frisbees, kites, acrobatics …. The park is yours for 24 hours! Visiting artists from Europe, the UK and cultural communities in Manchester.
July 14 - 17 Circus Ronaldo (Belgium) "LA CUCINA DELL'ARTE"
As always, the rivalry between the two is what is so enchanting, but their skills at spinning giant rounds of pizza dough (let alone everything else they touch!) are equally impressive. Highly enjoyable, brilliantly performed, this is circus-theatre at its most creative. Their tent holds 300 people and we imagine the run will sell out again. Sept 28 - 30 Carabosse (France) - "INSTALLATION DE FEU"
Carabosse make glorious atmospheric structures laced with firepots - a kind of fantasy never-neverland. You will love this.
WOW: Windermere over Water A weekend extravaganza around the lake District's most celebrated lake. Street music fanfares, dance, street theatre and installations for everyone on this carfree grassy mound …. and on Saturday night a visit from extraordinary French company 'Quidams' (who performed at Streets Ahead in Greater Manchester, during the millennium year) with their delightful night-time show Herbert's Dream - four stilted wraiths guide the crowd on journey to find a mysterious light. On their travels they grow in stature and girth, until finally they untether their prize and sail off across the lake with it, to echoing bursts of fireworks from Manchester-based pyro wizards Walk the Plank.
